Who Is Mr. King &What is YEPP!?
UPP! President of the North American Region and YEPP! founder Seth D. King is a hip hop influenced middle school computer technology teacher in LA. He created these talent shows to support middle and high school students to break into creative performance, public speaking, singing, hip hop, dance, and acting.
Either as solo acts or through intricate group performances, students are provided with personalized mentorship and instructional “performance technology” to set goals and create a top-notch performance, while learning to embrace challenges such as overcoming peer pressure and public performance fears.“I started YEPP! as a character development and artistic enrichment program,” says King, “but it became fused with the talent shows to empower students to express creatively, promote peace in the community, and develop as leaders.”
YEPP! has become a vehicle for hundreds of Central LA youths to channel their energy into healthy, constructive and positive creative outlets and away from violent, self-destructive and harmful ones, so says King. Students compete in singing, dancing, comedy, instrument performance, acting, band, rapping and poetry, among other talent categories.
YEPP! also partners closely with the Hip Hop School of Arts (HHSA) and its founder and director, legendary B-boy Julio Lil’ Cesar Rivas. Not just for performers, YEPP! Talent Shows have developed into a student-run “talent show event production club,” which include opportunities for students to produce, direct, stage manage, set design, film, photograph, and serve as production crew members.
In fact, King’s informal interviews of student participants over the past six YEPP! talent shows at ACRAHS #5 report: 1) greater self-esteem and confidence; 2) conquering of fears; 3) setting goals and accomplishing them; 4) increasing a sense of community and belonging in school; and 5) greater experience of peace and fulfillment at school.
"We have combined performances by professional music and dance performing artists as well as educational guest speakers with empowering messages for the youth of Los Angeles along with a benefit to raise awareness and support for environmental sustainability and alternative energy technologies, says King, who decided to form UPP! into a 501(c)3 California non-profit organization after he was literally inspired by the students of ACRAHS #5 to create a One World Declaration of Peace Petition (see full declaration below). “We are proud to continue our work to empower the extraordinary students at ACRAHS #5 to produce, perform, and express creatively, and also to be part of a global movement to create environmental sustainability in all aspects of our lives, including through peace building, inner city gardening, tree planting, and support for non-fossil fuel clean energy choices."
The Luminaries: Conscious Hip Hop
At the YEPP! Hip Hop Talent Show #7, the Luminaries will perform three of their inspiring conscious hip hop songs, Free Energy, Peace and Be The Change. Formed in Venice Beach, the Luminaries have now taken their message international and crowds everywhere sing along the anthem, “Peace Worldwide Starts From Inside!”
The band sees their role as more than just musicians, but as catalysts for change. Each member has played the role of teacher, social worker, and activist, from working with homeless youth to defending the nation’s largest urban community garden, The South Central Farm. Luminaries embody the power of service, and do so of course through their inspirational live performances that leave audiences rejuvenated from the soul, down to the cellular level.
Luminaries bring an amazing live show that’s reminiscent of the golden era of Hip Hop, fused with a soulful, electro, live band, funk filled experience! As expressed by one of the “Grandfathers” of the genre, and early founder of modern rap, Afrika Bambaataa reminded us the power of “Peace, Unity, Love, and having Fun!” In the same vein, Luminaries create a soundscape of Hip Hop mantras inviting audiences to participate in the connectivity of one another while going ecstatic on the dance floor!
In 2011, Luminaries were invited as global ambassadors by Sister Cities International to participate in a 10-day tour through the Middle East promoting peace. The crew visited youth centers, college students, and political dignitaries sharing their cultural philosophies, while performing concerts in Israel, and Palestine including the widely attended Taybeh Music Festival. In 2012, Luminaries again graced the International stage by performing at the Bali Spirit Festival in Ubud, Indonesia, as well at the Synthesis Festival in Chichen Itza Mexico commemorating the famed Winter Solstice. Luminaries continue to expand their horizons in the global performance market, as more opportunities arise.

United People for Peace (UPP!) One World Declaration of Peace
We declare peace now inside of ourselves. We declare peace inside of our schools, our communities and our families. We declare peace in between all people of all races, religions, beliefs, countries, genders, abilities and creeds. We are peaceful and responsible people, and we take constructive actions to realize these declarations.
We stand for the health and happiness of every person. We acknowledge the fact that we are all of one family --- that of Earthlings. We stand in communication, partnership and friendship creating a world where each and every person can survive, thrive and live in peace. We are actively accomplishing projects, developing technologies and running organizations which will effectively end famine, poverty, disease, discrimination, corruption and war on Earth.
We stand for democracy and justice. We respect, support and defend all people as global citizens under International and Common Law in accord with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We are responsible people who rigorously seek truth, defend justice and hold our leaders and politicians accountable. Governments are here to serve the people. We acknowledge it. We require it. They may no longer steer our world towards war. We are conscious people who recognize the fact that we have the ethical, social, intellectual, political and economic power to bring about world peace.
We stand for thoughtful, creative and intelligent solutions that naturally dissolve away fear, hatred, anger, conflict and violence like water onto fire. We stand up, invest in and politically require renewable and unlimited energy resources and technologies to cause universally available clean energy and environmental sustainability. We are purchasers, contributors and financiers whom invest in ethical, progressive and transparent companies and organizations only, as a rule.
We are non-compliant with any organization, corporation or government which does not align with our ethical principles, and we are actively overcoming each of them with education, transparency and justice. We are former police officers and military soldiers who have ceased to enforce, fight, die or kill for illegal, inhumane, unethical or unjust national or international governing agencies. We are a community of whistle-blowers and their supporters who are speaking out about national, military and corporate crimes against humanity.
We stand together, as a human family, taking care of all of our children with mercy and forgiveness between Ethiopia & Eritrea, Israel & Palestine, and the United States & Iran, North Korea, China, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Pakistan. We stand in compassion, partnership and personally in service to our fellow mankind in the face of any and all natural or man-made disasters like Hurricane Sandy, the Fukushima Earthquake and Nuclear Power Plant disaster in Japan, the shootings in Sandy Hook and the bombing in Boston.
We are responsible people dedicated to causing an international peace and education movement that both local and global leaders must recognize, acknowledge and respect. We are the change that Gandhi spoke about and the dream of Dr. King. We represent the 99% and support people's movements such as the Occupy Movement, the One People's Public Trust (OPPT), the Fix the World (FTW) Project and the March Against Monsanto. We are standing up, providing solutions, investing progressively towards peace and marching now as necessary.
